Adela Akers, Interlacings Reception

Interlacings by Adela Akers

Adela Akers, Interlacing, linen, horsehair metal foil

Interlacings: October 7 - December 30, 2023

A note from Hammerfriar Gallery: We are saddened by the recent passing of Adela Akers on August 7, 2023. Adela has been an honor and joy to work with over the past several years, and our thoughts and warm wishes are with her family, friends, and many admirers during this time of loss. We will continue to hold this planned exhibition of Adela’s work, and know that she will be with us in spirit!

Adela Akers was a Spanish-born textile and fiber artist, who resided in West Sonoma County and was an active and beloved fixture of the Sonoma County arts community. She was Professor Emeritus at the Tyler School of Art in in Philadelphia, and had a career that spanned the history of modern fiber art. Virtually up until her passing at age 90, Akers continued to create her weavings that are at once fresh and timeless. Her work is in the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Art and Design, and most recently, her piece, “Parallel Lines” was acquired by The Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Adela Akers’ envisioned this show as a combination of her recent and earlier work. She said the title, “Interlacings,” would relate to the way fibers are woven together, but also leave something to the viewers’ imagination as to what the show was about… In light of her recent passing, perhaps it takes on an even greater significance. We envision this exhibition as a chance to honor the memory and work of an accomplished artist, a magnanimous woman, and a dear friend. Please join us and Adela’s husband, Cary, for the opening reception in her honor, Saturday, October 7th, 2023.
